I am a rubbish gardener, but I have had an allotment for a couple of years now and I have to say I wish everybody had one because of how it can uplift your spirits. Being out of doors, surrounded by greenery (even weeds!) and with just the sound - literally - of the birds and the bees is so stress-busting. When you do actually clear a patch of ground and grow something the sense of satisfaction is wonderful, and your own home grown food is always always delicious. Of course you will find yourself being given all sorts of surplus veg from other allotment holders who are such a friendly lot. Perhaps they are so friendly because they are relaxed and happy because they are experiencing nature? As a nation we could save a fortune on healthcare if we got lots of people digging!
